Boston Emissions aired for more than 20 years on 104.1 WBCN. In August 2009, the show moved dial positions to CBS Radio’s sister station, 100.7 WZLX.

Now you want to know how to get on the radio…

The focus of Boston Emissions is to expose and support independent bands and artists of varying rock styles from Boston and New England. Not everything I get works with the show (it’s a rock show after all) but I do try to make room for what makes sense.

Do a little homework and know who you are sending your music to.

This is meant to answer just about every single question I have gotten about music on the show.

As the Local Music Director and host of Boston Emissions, I – Anngelle Wood, that’s me – enjoy finding music, seeing shows, meeting bands and putting together the play list each week. It is time consuming. I don’t often have the opportunity to listen to everything as it comes in.

If the audio quality and musicianship is good, if I like it, you will eventually get played. I base weekly play lists around new releases and upcoming shows.

Tell me when you are playing. If no one knows you are playing, they can't go see you.
Email show listing to Anngelle(a)WZLX (dot) com with band/day and date/venue in subject.
Please do not send mp3s, flyers or attachments here.

I am not a music reviewer so I don’t critique your work. I do offer some advice if you ask or will point you in a helpful direction.

I do accept MP3s, bandcamp links, download links and attachments – with band info in a one sheet – at bostonemissions(a)gmail(dot)com only. If you send a download link, please do not set it to time out. I often miss your window and can’t retrieve songs. It’s difficult to follow up in time.

I *do not* use myspace. I can't search around the internet for your info. Please provide it. I like well-maintained band websites and blogs. I also really like bandcamp.

Do also send a copy of your cd. I like downloads but like a hard copy to take with me to listen to away from the station.

Here are the most basic requests for submitting music to Boston Emissions on WZLX…

PLEASE DO:

-learn a little about me and my show. I operate with a personal approach. Send an email, say hello. Band members preferred. Not all managers are helpful. Or good representation of what a band is about.

-invest in a decent recording. Audio quality is very important. I hear a lot of music. Some is just not good enough to be put on the air. There are many great studios/producers in our area. If you need assistance finding one, ask.

-send unwrapped cd with proper track listing in a clearly identifiable jewel case/digipack/professional-type container.
Make it as easy as possible for me to get to it and identify it. I lose stuff all the time, especially flat envelopes and skinny, unmarked cd sleeves. If I can’t find it, I’ll forget about it. If you are wondering why I never played you, it may be because I lost your skinny disc.

-include a basic one-sheet with band info (please no full press kits) with direct band contact info. If it is not clear that you are local, I will not play your music.

I don’t care who has played you, who has booked you, what show you did, or who you know. None of that matters. I choose what gets played based on the music. And name dropping is dumb.

-identify which songs are clean (kick ass songs laced with sh!t and f$ck equal no dice) – star them, circle them, whatever.
Radio edits are great and your cred remains intact. You can edit song by dropping out or flipping the offending word.

-come see me at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Social. I co-host the event on the second Tuesday of every month at the Model Cafe in Allston from 7-10pm. If we meet, the odds of me remembering and playing you are much greater. I will never hide from you.

No matter how lame it sounds it is very good for bands to get out and mingle (aka network). Running a band properly is like running a business.

I hear from a lot of people. Some are pushy, argumentative, don’t read basic requests, act silly….for that, I will share these “don’t's” – all of which are based on real incidents:

-Please no calls. Email only.

-Please do not post on my pages or send emails asking if I got your music, if I listened to it, if I’m going to play it, if I like it, how come I don’t like it or why I haven’t played it.

-Please do not email asking to be in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Rumble.

If you want to be played on the show, send your music.
